Wait, There’s More

On Friday, Pinkett-Smith relied on her Facebook “Red Table Talk” show to keep it 100 on what really went down behind the scenes. She and Will spoke to the masses and fully explained the context behind Jada’s secret romance.

“With all the stuff going on in the press, I felt like it was important to come to the table and really clear the air. Somebody made a statement for me that wasn’t a statement I made that went cray-cray. … I guess about four and a half years ago – started a friendship with August and we actually became really, really good friends. And it all started with him just needing some help. Me wanting to help his health – you and I were going through a very difficult time – you kicked me to the curb. We broke up. … I got into a different kind of entanglement with August. One thing that I want to get clear, clean up – about you giving permission, which is, the only person that could give permission in that particular circumstance is myself. Yeah, but what August was probably trying to communicate, because I could actually see how he could perceive it as permission because we were separated amicably and I think he also wanted to make it clear that he’s not a home wrecker, which he’s not. … It was a relationship, absolutely. I was in a lot of pain, I was very broken. Now in the process of that relationship, I definitely realized that you can’t find happiness outside of yourself. Luckily enough, you and I were also going through a process of healing in a much different manner. … I just wanted to feel good. It had been so long since I felt good and it was really a joy to just help heal somebody.” (“Red Table Talk”)

Before You Go

Smith echoed Jada’s remarks and confirmed they had briefly split up a few years ago.

“One of the reasons why I wanted to come to the table is the media, the headlines, we specifically never said anything. We were purposely not saying anything. Any headline that said ‘Jada said, Will said,’ or ‘The Smiths said’ is not true. We specifically never said anything. So coming to the table was like – it got to the point where you got to say something. … When Aug first came around [us], he was really sick. And the outpouring for him from our family was initially about his health. … We decided we were going to separate for a period of time. … I love my baby, I’m going to stand by my baby no matter what – for me, this was years ago so the fact that it’s coming up now, I feel like it could feel weird for people that we’re laughing and talking about it and our experiences of working through it, fighting through it, talking through it – the ‘why now’ is weird. … We came together young and we were both broken in our own ways and to be able to make mistakes without the fear of losing your family is so critical.” (“Red Table Talk”)
