Sia felt the wrath of the Barbz this week when she confused Nicki Minaj for Cardi B and has now apologized.
The situation began when a fan asked Sia if she would ever collaborate with Minaj, noting that the “TROLLZ” rapper had her hair half black and half white like Sia usually does. In a now-deleted tweet, Sia thought Nicki was Cardi B and replied to the fan, “I love @iamcardib and although this isn’t a collaboration, I would love to COLLAB with her any day!”
The Barbz, Nicki’s fanbase, were upset at Sia’s mistake and reminded her that the two rappers have had a well-known, highly-publicized beef. However, Sia thought the Barbz were insinuating that she had started yet another feud between Nicki and Cardi.
She wrote in another deleted tweet, “I don’t give a shit about feuds, George Floyd was fucking murdered. Breonna Taylor. Murdered. Come on let’s rise in unity. You think @iamcardib and Nikki [sic] are so petty that they would want you focusing on a silly feud instead of REAL NEWS.”
Realizing that she misspelled Nicki’s name, Sia came back and wrote, “My fuck up @NickiMinaj,” before adding in a follow-up tweet, “Hey @iamcardib @NickiMinaj you aren’t thinking about a feud right now are you? We are focused on the problem of systemic racism.”
Finally realizing all of her errors, Sia scrubbed the tweets and offered a simple apology on Saturday (June 13). “I totally misunderstood a tweet earlier that has resulted in me making a buffoon out of myself. Sorry @NICKIMINAJ and @iamcardib if you hear about it. Can I just like you both?” she wrote.
The apology did not stop a fan war from breaking out over social media. Some fans saw Sia’s apology as genuine and applauded her for bringing up systemic racism and George Floyd’s death. Others decided to bring up images of a Sia performance from 2011 which she donned blackface and demanded that she be canceled, claiming that she was a racist. She explained the origins of photo in July 2019 saying that she was “painting [herself] into the backdrop.”
In defense of Sia, fans brought up Minaj working with 6ix9ine for a second collaboration, “TROLLZ” given his criminal history and wondered if the Barbz would ever going to call Nicki out for working with the controversial rapper.
Regardless of the issue, #SiaIsOverParty began to trend on Twitter and fans on both sides went to bat for their respective favorite. Peep the back and forths below.
