Childish Gambino is on a release spree, and he’s not stopping anytime soon. The rollout for the Bando Stone and the New World has been immaculate so far, and within the slew of releases that have followed, comes the latest, ‘In the Night’ featuring Jorja Smith and Amaarae.

The track, as expected, is yet another experimental foray exploring the versatility of Childish Gambino, and seems to be inspired from the genres of hip hop, afro rhythms and house music coming together as a cohesive new whole!

The track features a soulful Gambino musing how he thinks of his muse and dreams of them in the night. Full of buzzy and boomy 808s that lend it an electric feel, the song is an exceptional expression of soul and there could be nobody better to compliment the mood better than Jorja Smith. With vocoder vocals and falsettos, Amaarae and the others fill up the entire frequency spectrum, and present a release that is as much hip hop as it is Daft Punk-esque. If this is any indication, the rest of the Bando Stone project is about to be absolute fire.

The song structure, too, is unique, and doesn’t pander to streaming set conventions. That said, the song is masterfully structured and is littered a familiar sense of glassy percussion elements that keep a steady pace conversing with the 808 basslines, whilst leaving ample space for vocals to be engineered and processed differently across the track. With minimalism alive, the change in vocal quality keeps the listener out of monotony and delivers an experience of love and longing like never before. Check out the song here!
