WNBA Announces $75m “Windfall”

The WNBA has announced that they will be receiving $75 million in investments to underwrite the league’s evaluation, overall growth, and marketing. The investors include Nike, Condolezza Rice, Baron Davis, and many more.

“We are incredibly fortunate to be able to capitalize on the current momentum around women’s sports and are grateful to the investors who have chosen to support the WNBA in an unprecedented way and to our team governors who continue to invest in the players and teams,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said.

Though the investment is unprecedented, it still pales in comparison to the massive capital invested in the NBA. According to Yahoo Finance, the average WNBA salary is $120,648. The average salary in the NBA is $7.90 million for the 2020-21 season and is projected to be $8.25 million in the 2021-22 season.

The $75 million is the equivalent of what superstar ballers Steph Curry and Chris Paul make combined.  Meanwhile, the highest paid female WNBA players, Sue Bird, Dewanna Bonner, and Liz Cambage all make $221,450 each.
