A Compassionate Fundraiser

A GoFundMe page created for survivors of the Buffalo, N.Y., mass shooting surpassed $1 million on May 19, just three days after it was created.

The National Compassion Fund and Tops Friendly Markets started the GoFundMe to provide financial assistance to those affected by the supermarket shooting. The GoFundMe has reached $1,043,350, but still short of the current goal to raise $1.5 million.

“One hundred percent of the contributions donated to this fund will go directly to victims and survivors of this atrocity,” the fundraiser stated.

GoFundMe set up an official page where other verified fundraisers for victims’ families may be found.  Those victims include Andre McNeil, who went to Tops grocery store to purchase a birthday cake for his son AJ on the child’s 3rd birthday and retired police officer Aaron Salter Jr who died trying to subdue the shooter.  According to the fundraising site, “Every fundraiser on this page has been certified by our Trust & Safety specialists.”

Other organizations raising funds for the impacted community include Candles in the S.U.N. (candlesinthesun.com), a local nonprofit group accepting food and other donations which are distributed at daily pop-ups; Feed Buffalo (feedbuffalo.org), which provides food and supports other grassroots efforts; and Black Love Resists in the Rust (blackloveresistsintherust.org), which collects donations for food and mental health support in conjunction with Colored Girls Bike Too.
