The Justice Department recently closed a re-opened investigation into the 1955 murder of Emmett Till. The admission from his accuser, Carolyn Bryant that she lied was found questionable and could not be verified.

FBI Closes Emmet Till’s Reopened Case

Bryant-Donham, who is still alive at 87-years-old, told the authors of the book The Blood of Emmett Till in 2017 that Emmett did not grab her and make sexually lewd comments towards her, as she claimed to her husband and brother in the summer of 1955.

Four years after that admission, Donham’s denial of changing her story and federal officials not finding enough evidence led to the case being closed again.

“Nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,” Bryant-Donham was quoted in saying in The Blood of Emmett Till.   Yet the Department of Justice found “insufficient evidence” in her redacted account of the events that led up to Emmett Till’s death.

Emmett’s accused murderers have since died and there has been confusion as to whether or not Carolyn Bryant Donham – who is still alive – actually recanted her statement.

The documentarian who interviewed Donham stands by his work, saying he took copious notes from his meeting with her when he said: “she spilled the beans” and retracted her accusations against the 14-year-old black child.
